Trees for Climate

Trees for Climate is an ambitious multi-million-pound, multi-year programme offering landowners, farmers and community groups free expert advice and funding to transform their land through hedge and tree planting and woodland creation. One of the most significant interventions since the Community Forests were launched over three decades ago, recent years have seen a huge uptake in tree planting across the county.

Why plant and establish trees and woods?

Planting and establishing the right trees in the right place, alongside other crucial habitats, brings many benefits; enriching people’s lives and livelihoods, helping nature flourish and increasing climate resilience.

There are so many great reasons to establish trees. To support resilient and sustainable food production, enhance soil fertility and nutrient cycles, provide timber and wood products.

The woodlands and trees that we plant help to link up habitats for wildlife, capture and store carbon, reduce urban heat stress, improve water quality and reduce flooding.

Trees in our neighbourhoods bring communities together, create spaces for play and learning, improve air quality, make places look attractive and connect us with our culture and heritage.

Advice and funding available

We can provide free advice and funding to help you to plant and establish trees and woods, alongside other crucial habitats.

Our advice is tailored to whether you are the landowner, farmer, a community group, or a local school. We can also support a wide range of projects – from small to large scale, urban to rural, natural regeneration to planting, and including hedgerows, trees, woods and other habitats.

Our local woodland advisors can support you through the application, planning, funding and planting stage and provide advice about ongoing maintenance.

Contact us to make an enquiry about your tree or woodland establishment project and one of our Woodland Advisors will be in touch.

We can support your project through:

Planning and design

We support a multi-disciplinary approach to designing new woodlands to achieve your objectives and maximise wider benefits to society. We will ensure that the right trees are planted in the right places.

Engagement with stakeholders

Part of a well-designed woodland is seeking the advice and approval of a range of statutory and local stakeholders. We can support this engagement process.

Forestry regulations

Regulatory approvals may be required for your project, depending on the scale and location. We will work with you and the relevant authorities to gain any necessary permissions needed for your project to become a reality.

Funding

There is currently a range of funding options available to support tree and woodland planting across the Greenwood area. We can work with you to match you with the funding option(s) that best suit your requirements.

Delivery

If you need help in delivering your project on the ground we can work with our partners to source not only the trees and materials you need, but also the resources needed to plant the trees. This can include working with local community and volunteer groups.

Future management and maintenance

To ensure your woodland delivers the benefits identified we will look wherever possible to create a further package of support and guidance.

At the end of the process you will have a well-designed, suitably funded new woodland.
