Sunday 5th September 2010 – Field Trip to Saltholme Wildlife Reserve

Field Trip to Saltholme Wildlife Reserve

Location: Saltholme Wildlife Reserve, Teesmouth.

Opened in January 2009 by the RSPB, this new reserve covers 380 hectares of former farm and industrial wasteland. Be amazed by what you can see in the heart of the Tees Valley. Just a stone's throw from Middlesbrough's heavy industry and the famous Transporter Bridge, this beautiful new nature reserve is home to a variety of wildlife. Winter visitors include knot from the Arctic, teal and shelduck. Spring brings ringed plovers, lapwing, oystercatchers, curlew, redshank and cormorants. Throughout the summer, Sandwich terns come to feed, while raptors, such as merlin and peregrine can often be spotted searching for prey. Other birds recorded include gulls, wigeon, coot, mute swans, great crested grebes, little egrets, gadwall, mergansers, reed warblers and short-eared owls.

This will be our group's first visit to this reserve and it means another early start to see what can be achieved out of an industrial wasteland.

Location: North Cave and Blacktoft Sands Reserves, East Yorkshire.

Two very good birdwatching sites and not that far apart. We will go to North Cave to begin with and have lunch there, then head off to Blacktoft Sands around 12.45.

North Cave Wetlands Reserve has been created from an old sand and gravel quarry. Six lakes have been created from the old quarry, as well as some wader scrapes, reedbeds, islands and grasslands. Common tern, little ringed plover, lapwing, redshank, waxwing, siskin, pochard, shoveler, gadwall and teal can all be seen at certain times of the year.

Blacktoft Sands provides one of a large number of wildlife habitats around the Humber Estuary. The Reserve has a large tidal reedbed and saline lagoons, which are rare in Europe and are an ideal habitat for a variety of breeding and migrant waders, including Avocets. Bitterns, marsh harriers and hen harriers can also be seen around the Reserve.

Who knows what else awaits us at these sites close to the Humber Estuary?
